The Best Fly Fishing is Everywhere - 11.7.2025
Ramblings & Readings, Creativity & Conservation, Happenings & Hope
My Fishy Friends,
Fall itself feels fleeting at the moment, but I know there’s still fall fishing to be found. And, as much as I dislike a dark end the workday, I admit that I’ve felt a bit refreshed by seeing some daylight out the window when opening my eyes for the first time. Maybe I’ll try that alongside a river this weekend…
Cheers,
Jesse

Fly Casting Across Languages
Every so often, I silently commend the Internet for its ability to connect me to someone or something that I’m interested in, and didn’t yet know about. Such was the case with the Instagram account @two________hand and their corresponding YouTube channel, which feature impressive and intriguing fly casting techniques, combined with entertaining and unique teaching methods. As the video linked below exemplifies, fly casting can and does cross the language barrier!
Last of His Kind
Legendary author, writer, angler, and outdoorsman Thomas McGuane was the subject of a new essay in The Atlantic — here’s the link — which, in part, discusses his new short story collection. “What will we lose when we lose the ‘literary outdoorsman’?” poses writer Tyler Austin Harper. I’m not sure that I want to know.
The Last Salmon Podcast
The Last Salmon, a podcast aimed at inspiring hope and solutions for a species in crisis, is now entering its second season. I just came across the show, and gave one episode a listen, but with guests such as Mikael Frödin, Yvon Chouinard, Marina and Stephan Dombaj, Robert Macfarlane, and many others, it now seems that all the episodes are worth it.
Local In-the-Field Opportunity
For those in the Eugene, Oregon area, there’s a cool opportunity to volunteer in the field with the McKenzie River Trust and our local Trout Unlimited chapter. On Saturday, Nov. 15th, we’ll be harvesting willows to be used in replanting efforts in the newly restored Quartz Creek, an upstream tributary to the McKenzie River. Following the work, there’s an opportunity to fish as well! Click here for more details and to register.
Tell You This
I don’t know who God is exactly.
But I’ll tell you this.
I was sitting in the river named Clarion, on a water splashed stone
and all afternoon I listened to the voices of the river talking.
