The Best Fly Fishing is Everywhere - 03.13.2026
Ramblings & Readings, Creativity & Conservation, Happenings & Hope
My Fishy Friends,
Today I’m headed home from a fishing trip and my head is a melting pot of blown shots, hooked fish, never-before-seen parts, rising and setting suns, rolling waves, unending conversations and unanswered questions. It’s all enough to keep me daydreaming about the trip for weeks to come.
Cheers,
Jesse

A Graceful Rise
Last weekend, International Women’s Day passed, and I saw several great posts and links online in commemoration. In particular, the American Museum of Fly Fishing’s page “A Graceful Rise” offers a detailed look at some of the many women who have contributed, in numerous and varied ways, to the practice, sport, and community of fly fishing. Their webpage—split into Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow—is nicely complemented by the latest issue of Fly Fisherman Magazine and its accompanying Instagram post.
Fly Fishing Miscellaneous
In a roundabout way I came across Japan’s‘trail culture magazine,’ TRAILS. Featured within are various trail- and hiking-related stories, including fly fishing. Use your web browser’s translator function to read the stories and following along through the broken English (or whatever language you choose). I’ve found the stories to be a unique take on the practice and storytelling—a nice change of pace.
All About Sawyer
Sawyer Paddles & Oars were recently featured on All Access with Andy Garcia and the short film gives a great overview of the manufacturer and their paddles and oars for drift boats, rafts, canoes, standup paddle boards, and more. Before your next river trip, explore their website and retail location in southern Oregon on the banks of the mighty Rogue River. Next year will be Sawyer’s 60th anniversary!
WaterNight
Corvallis, Oregon-based nonprofit Freshwaters Illustrated, dedicated to raising public awareness about the life, study, and conservation of freshwater ecosystems, is hosting its annual (and modestly priced) WaterNight on Wednesday, March 18th. The virtual event will share information about the organization, its work, and staff, showcase some upcoming films and projects, and raffle off a few things as a fundraiser for FI. Learn more and get tix here.
Shirked
A river is a thread sewn into time that is not subject to time, or at least not subject in the way we humans are… Because of this, the angler standing in the river casting is not so much absolved of time as disburdened of it, able to shirk its weight—for some moments anyway—before, with a dull thud, a trout strikes his swinging fly and he returns to pretending that he set himself in this cliff-shadowed stretch in search of fish.
